The Hospital was established in the year 1923. The Hospital and the College are within the precincts of about 52 acres on a sandy hill, which includes administrative buildings, wards, operation theatres, nursing school and college, students hostels, libraries, auditorium, lecture galleries, laboratories etc. There are altogether 52 blocks constructed in different periods with multiple entrances surrounded partly by slums.
The Hospital is providing the health care to the needy people not only of Visakhapatnam city / district and adjacent districts but also those of neighboring States of Orissa and Chhattisgarh.
The bed strength of the Hospital is 1037 and 240 beds in Superspecialty block not yet officially sanctioned and on average in a day 1250 out-patients, 115 to 130 admissions per day, 110 emergency cases are being treated and 60 to 70 surgeries including those of critical nature are also

The OP services of Gastroenterology, Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery, and Endocrinology will be provided on all days of the week except on Sunday.
There is a separate Super-Specialty block where super specialty services of the departments of Neurology, Endocrinology, Nephrology, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery are provided.
A project has been taken up for construction of Multistoried building for Oncology and Surgical Block with an estimation of 75 Crores under Corporate Social Responsibility activities with 7 major Industrial Companies namely; RINL / NTPC / ONGC / BHEL / HPCL / NMDC/ Port Trust as proposed by the Hon’ble M.P.Dr. T. Subbirami Reddy and as approved by the Chairman, Hospital Development Society, King George Hospital, Visakhapatnam and District Collector, Visakhapatnam.
A new Casualty Block and Department of Emergency Medicine are under construction.
